Learn to Draw the Portrait

While being inspired by Chuck Close, students will be exploring the graphite medium and learn the foundations of drawing. Students will look closely at the human face to learn how to render it naturalistically, along with learning the proper facial proportions.
  • Learn how to use the graphite medium 
  • Demonstrate the proportions of the face and how to render the eyes, nose and mouth 
  • Complete a realistic portrait drawing

Whimsical Watercolors

This camp will examine botanical life by creating a series of intricate watercolor paintings. Instructors will demonstrate watercolor techniques using washes, glazes, wet-on-wet, dry brush, and adding in salt, alcohol and other substances that create magical textures and patterns.
  • Learn how to use watercolor paints, colored pencils, and markers
  • Demonstrate various watercolor techniques
  • Complete a watercolor painting that represents a fantastical landscape

Character Sculptor

Learn to digitally sculpt characters for animated films with this introductory camp to Blender. Students will create a three dimensional characters while learning the essentials of the program, Blender.
  • Learn to use Blender
  • Explore techniques associated with sculpting & rendering 3D digital objects!
  • Designed for beginners to develop a foundational understanding of the program and discover unique skills to aid them in their future digital creations!

Concept Art for Gaming

Students in this camp will explore the relationship between concept art, artists and the gaming industry. Students will discover how to develop a series of concept illustrations, from which an entire game’s design can be inspired by. They will need to think critically about how to convey their vision of a character’s design, while providing & allowing optionality for game designers to work with. Excellent for portfolios!
  • Develop additional skills in Adobe Photoshop
  • Explore contemporary trends in concept art. 
  • Create a collection of concept character imagery for a potential game.
*Prior experience in Adobe Photoshop is encouraged prior to joining this camp. Students will find some Photoshop experience helpful when enrolled in this course.

Digital Manga Webtoons

Webtoons are a type of digital comic that originated in South Korea usually meant to be read on smartphones. They are formatted vertically, often featuring music or animations. In this camp each student will design their own webtoon, using an original story line and discover how to push their illustration skills further with Adobe Photoshop.
  • Develop illustration skills in Adobe Photoshop 
  • Experiment with webtoon formats for your comic 
  • Complete a digital illustration

Sketch Series

This drawing adventure is the perfect way for teens to explore sketching and learn techniques that they can take with them for all their future sketchbook adventures.   Each day we will focus on sketching a different subject and learn a new sketching technique.
  • Explore hatching, cross-hatching, stippling, scribbling and shading
  • Evoke different emotions through your sketches daily
  • Bring home a new sketch each day across a variety of subject matter

Focus on Realism

In this camp we will focus on rendering a drawing in a realistic, almost photographic way. Students will use multiple reference photographs to create a final drawing that implements subtle transitions in line and shadow, accurate proportions and perspective in an attempt to be mistaken for the real photograph!
  • Learn how to draw using the grid technique
  • Implement techniques in brightness values, edges & transitions
  • Complete a final drawing that combines multiple reference photographs

Pen & Ink Illustration

Explore the field of illustration from a new frame of reference. Students will be able to demonstrate their knowledge and proficiency with the pen and ink drawing medium. Students will learn about today’s illustrators and develop unique concepts of their own. 
  • Learn how to use micron pens and india ink
  • Demonstrate cross hatching, stippling and shading using pen and ink
  • Complete a series of three pen and ink drawings

Comic Book Creation

Cartoonists endeavor to create innovative storylines featuring fun and interesting characters, inspiring today’s students to do the same. Students will demonstrate their creativity and imagination through original creations of characters and stories, learning illustration essentials from cover to panel designs.
  • Learn how to use colored pencils and illustration markers
  • Demonstrate how to create storyboards
  • Complete a ten-panel page comic

Aerial Creations

Design a floating piece of art that moves with the flow of air and changes its view with every angle. Students will learn about artist Alexander Calder and how he redefined the space and form in his floating mobile sculptures. Students will draw, cut, paint and combine their 2-dimensional artworks to create a floating 3-dimensional artwork. 
  • Draw and paint a series of animals, planets or objects for your mobile
  • Learn to combine them at different lengths to create an interesting balance of forms
  • Hang your completed mobile artworks and watch how they change as you move around the sculpture

Intro to Photography

Students will explore the fundamentals of photography and the basics of camera operation such as aperture, shutter speed, depth of field and the rule of thirds.  Students will experience a complete artistic process from brainstorming to final product. Students will finalize their projects through the use of professional photo editing
  • Learn how to use a DSLR camera and tripod
  • Explore the manual functions on a DSLR camera and principal photography techniques
  • Create a series of photographs which tell a story or a narrative.
*Students are required to provide their own DSLR camera in order to participate in this camp.

Digital Content Creators

If you want to take your social media content to the next level with video effects, this camp is for you! Students will learn a series of viral video techniques that allow them to create digital content that is engaging and of a professional quality.
  • Shoot footage on your mobile phone 
  • Add post production elements such as motion graphics, transition effects, cinemagraphs and more
  • Edit your footage using easy to use software to create unique video content
*A smartphone with a camera is required for this camp. This camp will focus on shooting and editing footage. Posting on social media should be done only with the consent of the parents / guardians after camp.

Freestyle Ink Illustration

Create an intricate ink illustration using fine point micron pens and ink washes. Drawing inspiration from today’s most famous illustration and tattoo artists, we will explore their agile-yet-disciplined ink use. This camp will specifically focus on helping students improve in the style of improvisation, and create a work that is experimental and playful.
  • Learn how to use ink, technical pens and nylon brushes
  • Develop your own illustration style 
  • Complete a series of ink illustration drawings

Miniature Paintings

Each student will receives six 3 X 3 inch mini canvases and will be challenged to created a series of miniature paintings that are interconnected by subject matter, color and style.  The completed series will tell a visual story that is inspired by each student’s memory.
  • Learn how to paint on a small surface using fine brushes
  • Demonstrate the use of acrylic painting techniques such as stippling, dabbling, pour painting, dry brush and palette knife 
  • Complete a series of mini paintings

Pour Painting

Flow art, also known as acrylic pour painting, is a form of abstract art that uses acrylic paints with a variety of consistencies to create different effects. Layers of paint are poured into a cup, which then react with each other when combined to create organic free-flowing abstract compositions. Students will learn about color theory, different texture creating techniques and how to prepare a canvas for flow painting.
  • Learn techniques such as “the bloom effect,” ribboning, flip-cup and dirty pour 
  • Experiment with paint mediums to create different textures and paint reactions
  • Complete a series of acrylic flow paintings that demonstrates new techniques you have learned

Fashion Illustration

Bring your runway visions to life in this fashion drawing class. Students will learn how to draw a fashion figure with appropriate proportions and in various fashion poses. We will also focus on creating a series of sketches that represents a full fashion line, complete with clothing, shoes and accessories that mimics the textures and materials of the style. 
  • Learn how to create a fashion figure drawing called a “croquis.”
  • Draw with a variety of media to bring your style to life including pencil, marker and watercolor
  • Complete a series of fashion drawings that represents your unique style

Monster Magic

Use modeling clay to create your own magical monster family! Scary, cute, creepy or cuddly, you get to design and build a series of monsters inspired by your favorite characters or your own family! 
  • Brainstorming what your monsters will look like, their personalities and develop a backstory for each monster
  • Learn useful techniques - like rolling perfect spheres, cylinder, creating faces, limbs and textures with modeling clay
  • Complete a series of 3D monsters complete with names, identities and accessories

Digital Animation: Character Performance

It is open to any skilled digital artist who wishes to take their animation techniques to the next level, while studying amongst other advanced peers. Students are expected to have a solid grasp of the foundations of the program Adobe: Animate, Character design and desire a dedicated camp designed to push them creatively & artistically to gain mastery over animating a character’s emotional performance.
  • Gain further experience animating a character during dialogue 
  • Demonstrate understanding of the subtleties in body language during dialogue based performances.
  • Complete a high-level quality and fully performative animated monologue
*Students enrolled in this camp must have experience in digital animation in Animate.

3D Paper Art

3D Paper Art, more formally called “3D Decoupage” is the art of creating an image by cutting out elements of varying sizes and layering them on top of each other to create a unique art object. This camp is an excellent way to experiment with a new, unique material outside of traditional painting and drawing. 
  • Create the illusion of depth by layering and propping
  • Learn to create 3D forms using folded paper, exacto knives and adhesives
  • Each scene will be completely unique - inspired by your own interests or memories

Tik Tok Art Trends

In this camp, we will make a different artwork each day, experimenting with today’s most popular art trends. These include pop art, pour painting, watercolor abstraction, zentangle and more.
  • Make a series of mini artworks
  • Experiment with new tools and mediums from drawing to painting
  • Take videos of your artwork as you make them
*Students who want to document the process of making their artworks must bring a smartphone to this camp. We will shoot footage of our artworks using time lapse.  Posting on social media should be done only with the consent of the parents / guardians after camp.

Monster Clay Models

Monster Clay is an incredible oil based premium sculpting clay that is used by artists, animators and industrial designers to create sculpting miniatures and highly detailed figures and busts. The clay holds its shape extremely well and doesn't dry out allowing artists to create highly detailed figures with intricate textures. 
  • Learn how to join, mold, sculpt and carve your clay
  • Experiment with intricate textures by using imprinting techniques
  • Complete a 3D figurine model using Monster Clay

Manga Sidekick Stickers

Manga comics have highly stylized characteristics and engaging storylines that have become very popular in today's culture. Students will develop their own sidekick character from their favorite manga comic. The completed manga drawings will be printed as custom stickers.
  • Learn how to use pencil, illustration markers, and ink  
  • Demonstrate use of  line art and shading techniques
  • Complete a manga drawing that you can share with friends in the form of a sticker
*Sticker sheets will be printed and available at One River School after camp has concluded. Our staff will reach out to you as soon as they are ready for pick up.

Toon Town

Students will explore environmental design by creating a cartoon-inspired business for a class collaborative project, ToonTown! Students will illustrate their cartoon business’ building, its environment, the items it will sell and characters who will run it.

This camp combines science, technology, engineering, art and math to create an artwork that lights up! Students will consider both the vessel and the internal elements for their creation using paper, markers, colored pencils and paint.
  • Design, draw and cut a vessel and animals for your illuminated creation
  • Source elements in nature such as grass, rocks and dirt to create a life-like habitat
  • Use lights and batteries to illuminate your creation for a day and night version

Mastering drawing of your anime characters requires learning human proportions, muscles and how the body changes in different poses. We will focus on these techniques to develop a strong foundation for our characters so that they look life-like and proportional.

  • Learn how your manga inspired  figures differ from a traditional figure drawing

Street Art: Galaxies

The street-art movement marked by artists around the world has placed graffiti on the map and grown to be an accepted creative outlet. In this camp, students will study graffiti as a base for making their own street-art paintings that are galaxy themed.. Students will work on large-scale wood panels using acrylic and spray paint. 
  • Learn how to use spray paint, acrylic paint, and Exacto knives
  • Experiment with techniques like soft mist, raised stencils, bounced paint and creating comets
  • Complete one large scale spray painting

Architectural Drawing

Art and function come together in this exciting realistic drawing camp! Explore technical principles and visual language of architectural drawing. Students will work on grid paper and vellum while learning to think spatially as well as create beautiful realistic drawings from inspirations around them.

Learn to paint on your iPad using Procreate. Students will recreate the work of a famous artist of their choice, with a twist! The challenge here will be to mimic the brushstrokes, color palette and tools replicating a traditional painting to a digital artwork.

  • Learn how to use advanced brushes, download new brushes and create your own
  • Create a digital artwork that is inspired by a famous masterpiece.
*Students are required to provide their own iPad (with Apple Pencil/Stylus) and Procreate App in order to participate in this camp.

Design and create your own custom accessories, such as keychains, phone rings and jewelry using a high gloss epoxy resin!Our instructors will guide students step by step on how to create their unique accessories.

  • Add color, dried flowers, glitter and powder to create texture

Printmaking 101

Printmaking is a technique dating back to the 13th century in East Asia where woodcut blocks were used to create prints of text and visual representations. Albrecht Dürer, one of the most famous printmakers, mastered the technique by creating sensational artworks using printmaking.  In this camp we will learn a variety of printmaking techniques from monoprints to etchings.
  • Learn several printmaking techniques including monoprints, etchings, direct transfers and rubbings.
  • Experiment with ink and color to create a series of prints
  • Combine your prints to create a series of images

Cosplay: Headware & Helmets

Cosplay, one of One River’s most popular camps, allows students to design and build a functional costume or prop using EVA foam.  For those new to this form of art, cosplaying is an activity where you dress as your favorite character from comics, film or TV. 
  • Learn how to cut, layer, glue and shape EVA foam
  • Focus on making props such as helmets, headdresses, masks, crowns, horns and more
  • This camp is often taken in conjunction with Cosplay: Shields & Swords

This Summer Course is open to teen artists grades 9-12 who wish to take their realism drawing techniques to the next level, while studying amongst other high school age peers. Students in this camp will focus on mastering skills in representation, scale, value and perspective to enhance & advance their observational drawing skills.
  • Learn how to work with charcoal, blending stumps, chalk pastels and more.
  • Demonstrate an understanding of realism through light & value
  • Complete a high quality drawing from observation
* Recommended for students grades 9-12.

Video Production: Documentary

Students will discover the core processes behind the production of film & video content. Each student will be tasked with recording footage both in & outside of class for a short documentary film. Students will walk away with a strong foundation for storytelling through film mediums.
  • Learn to use Adobe Premiere.
  • Demonstrate pre production, editing, scene transitions, voice over, click tracks, credits and more!
  • Create a short 2-3 minute documentary video.
*No prior experience in video production is required to join this camp. Students are required to bring their own video camera in order to participate in this camp.

Once Upon a Time: Storybook Art

Students will create one artwork each day, using stories as inspiration. Together, we'll read classics, as well as new books and talk about the illustrations and the meanings behind the words. Afterwards, students will experiment with drawing, painting, and sculpture to create their own enchanted artworks. This camp combines the young artists' love of reading and art-making!
  • Read one book per day and learn the secrets behind the illustrations and words
  • Demonstrate skills across drawing, painting, sculpture, and more
  • Complete 5 meaningful artworks by the end of camp

High on a mountain top…. or…. in the dark alley of a busy city? In this camp we will focus on developing a digital drawing of scenery of each student’s choice. We will explore how to draw both architectural elements in our scene, as well as more organic natural elements. 
  • Learn how to draw in Adobe Photoshop to create a scene
  • Explore tools like perspective wrap, vanishing point and content aware fill
  • Complete a digital illustration of a unique scene

Digital Manga: Characters

Consistent in numerous Manga lore and stories, is the theme of characters with energy powers. Students will discover how to push their illustration skills further with Adobe Photoshop, through advanced lighting and filter effects, in order to produce a team of heroes and villains, clashing with supernatural abilities. During this camp, students will investigate the illustrated physics of energy beams, blasts, and other electric bursts, as well as the dynamic body positions necessary to produce these charges.
